Book Summary

When we hear about these cases of children forgotten in their car seats, left alone in the hot sun to die, our first reaction is to instinctively blame the parent or caregiver. We think, how could anyone forget about their own child for a moment, let alone hours? But the awful reality is that these tragedies happen to people from all walks of life. Many of the parents detailed in this book never thought such a thing could ever happen to them. They were wrong.

On average, thirty-seven U.S. children die each year after becoming trapped or forgotten in a hot vehicle. Between the years 1998 and 2014, 636 children perished inside a hot car in the United States. The numbers are staggering. The stories are heartbreaking. But what can we do about it?

In Backseat Tragedies: Hot Car Deaths, bestselling true crime authors RJ Parker and JJ Slate explore the circumstances that led to the deaths of over twenty children who died of hyperthermia, or heatstroke, in a car. They explore the science of how quickly a car can heat to deadly temperatures and why the human brain can so easily be tricked into forgetting something as important as a child. They also highlight important steps we can take as a community to prevent future casualties. Spreading awareness about the reality of hot car deaths is the first step toward eliminating these tragedies. ●●WITH PHOTOS●●

My Thoughts

Well folks, if you're human with even an ounce of empathy, this is a book that will certainly rip you apart and chew you up. These tragedies are among the worst that happen in my opinion. But that said, is this book a good read? Definitely! Is it necessary read? Absolutely! Anyone who lives in a climate where temperatures reach and exceed the 70's Fahrenheit (or 20's Celsius) should read this. Anyone who is a parent should read this. Anyone who is ever in a position of caring for little ones should read this. I'm being totally honest about that.

This book is all about increasing awareness of a growing problem - child deaths in hot cars. A problem that is 100% avoidable if you know and understand the facts. I was very surprised to read how fast a child will actually come to harm in a hot car. I didn't realize their bodies are incapable of cooling themselves like adults are. Or how quickly the temperature rises inside a vehicle even if its cooler outside. Or that we should keep our vehicles locked while sitting at home. Or how many organizations are out there dedicated to educating us about children and car safety. All these things and much much more is discussed in exceptional detail in this book.

Informative, educational, with enough real life examples to undoubtedly convince you how this tragedy can happen and is becoming a real threat. Highly recommend reading this one and getting a copy for anyone that could benefit from this knowledge.

** In the spirit of full disclosure, I designed the cover art for this book.
